Hard days

Why today weighs more than it should

Heavy one today. You felt it before your feet found the floor. It's like wearing a wet coat indoors. Nothing's wrong, exactly. Everything just weighs more, and small jobs ask for twice the effort. A heavy day isn't a sign you're failing. It's a heavy day. That's all it has to be.

Remember what the cigarette promised on days like this. A lift. Most of that lift was relief from the last one wearing off. Part of today's weight may even be your system finding its balance without it. The cigarette helped soak the coat, then charged you for a few dry minutes.

You don't have to fix the whole day, or look good carrying it. Scripture says the Lord is close to the brokenhearted. Not to the ones who've got it all together. Close to the ones having a day exactly like this. He isn't waiting for you to feel better before He shows up.

One kindness, then. Change into the softest, driest clothes you own. Let that be the whole project for a minute. Then hand Him what you can't put down. Here, Lord. Hold this for a while. He can hold it longer than you can. Wet coats dry. This one is drying on someone free.
