Hard days

Was life better before?

Flat days come with a theory, and it sounds reasonable. Maybe life was better before. Meals were more fun. Wins felt like wins. Evenings had a little spark. Now everything's a shade grayer, and you're wondering if you traded color for this. That theory has the story backwards.

Part of this gray may be your reward system recalibrating. The cigarette pushed it hard, so ordinary pleasures started paying out less. Every good feeling it handed you went on a card with your name on it. Cutting up a credit card doesn't make you poor. The balance does, and you're paying it down.

Each gray stretch clears a little more of it. Your brain is relearning to reward small things. A good meal. A laugh that catches you off guard. A job finished. Go back to it, and the balance doesn't vanish. It starts growing again. This dullness is a debt ending, not your life shrinking.

Spend a few dollars of the cigarette money on one small pleasure today. Good bread. A plant for the windowsill. Enjoy it slowly, on purpose, even if it only half lands. God is at work in the rewiring, even on days it feels like nothing. This gray is paid for. The color that comes back is yours to keep.
