Hard days

Why everything hits harder right now

A song in a store. Someone's tone on the phone. An old photo that ambushed you mid scroll. Small things are landing hard lately, and you can't always say why. Your feelings didn't get worse. They got louder. Before, whenever one got too big, you reached for a cigarette.

Ever sat on your foot until it fell asleep? Standing up is miserable. Pins and needles, clumsy steps, a strange buzzing. Nobody thinks the foot is broken. That sting is feeling coming back. Your emotions are doing the same thing right now. The cigarette kept your feelings asleep and called it calm.

Maybe you've believed you can't handle big feelings on your own. You're handling one right now. It's awkward, like any new skill. But every hard feeling you let pass through teaches you something the cigarette kept hidden. You can feel the whole thing, and it still passes.

Give today's feeling a name. One word, said out loud. Sad. Lonely. Angry. Scared. A named feeling shrinks to its real size. Then bring that same word to God. He already knows the whole sentence it came from. Pins and needles are what waking up free feels like.
