Hard days

Shame is a terrible bodyguard

Say your best friend calls from the shoulder of a highway. Flat tire, dark road, already late. You wouldn't open with how stupid they are. You'd ask if they're safe. Now replay how you've talked to yourself today. You'd hang up on anyone who spoke to you like that.

The harshness feels like keeping yourself in line. It works the other way. Shame is heavy and lonely, and it wants relief fast. The cigarette always showed up right after the shame, like it had been waiting outside. That's the problem with shame as a bodyguard. It keeps letting the wrong one in.

Kindness toward yourself isn't going soft on the goal. It's protecting the person who has to carry it. And God is gentler with you than you've been all day. Borrow His view for a minute. Lord, let me see myself the way You do. He isn't disgusted by your struggle. He's patient with it, and with you.

Then do for yourself what you'd do for that friend once they got home safe. Run the shower hot tonight and stay in it five minutes longer than you need to. It's small. It tells you someone's looking after you. Shame has a harder time getting in past that, and so does the cigarette. Be on your own side tonight. God already is.
