Hard days

When the days lose their edges

Two in the afternoon, and you're on your third lap of the kitchen. No shift to get to. Nobody waiting on you. Maybe you're between jobs, maybe between chapters, and today looks just like yesterday. Then a thought drifts in, dressed up as a plan. A cigarette would give this hour something to do. The days have lost their edges.

Busy weeks almost felt easier, didn't they? The habit doesn't only live in stress. It sprawls into open time. A packed day gives it nowhere to stand. A blank day is all standing room. The cigarette used to fake a shape for days like this. It penciled in little appointments with itself and called that a routine. What's hard is the blank space, not you.

Skip the big schedule. Most of them die by Thursday, and that stings worse than the drift. Build one fixed point instead. Same time every day, whatever the rest of the day does. A walk at four. Lunch at a table instead of over the sink. Ten minutes with God at the same hour, and He keeps it even when you bring nothing. One nail in the wall, and the whole day hangs off it.

Choose that hour now, before the afternoon chooses for you. Then let the rest of the day drift. Seasons between things are hard, and there's no medal for stuffing them with errands. This one won't last forever. When the next chapter comes, with edges and people and somewhere to be, your days get their shape back. A real one this time, and all of it yours.
