Hard days
When gray shows up twice
Same gray as yesterday. You got through it on the promise that today would be different, and today showed up in the exact same color. The second one lands harder than the first. One bad day is a bad day. Two start to look like a pattern. Behind that sits a question you haven't said out loud. What if this is just how it is now?
The crash isn't the gray. It's the surprise. A hard day you saw coming lands once. One that ambushes you lands twice, because it arrives with a question stapled on. Did this fail? That question weighs more than the day. And the cigarette used to show up on gray mornings like a rescue. Most of what it rescued you from was the last dose wearing off.
Plan the next one tonight, before it shows up. Not pessimism. Logistics. Ten minutes, one sheet of paper. When you get up. The one thing that will happen no matter what. What you'll eat. When you'll be in bed. Stick it on the fridge, like a note for a house sitter. Tomorrow's version of you gets instructions instead of an ambush.
Add one more line at the bottom, for God. Whatever color tomorrow is, be in it. If most days start coming in gray, add a doctor's appointment to the sheet. Good plans make room for help. If tomorrow comes in lighter, you lose nothing but a note. If it comes in gray, it meets someone free and ready for it.
