Hard days

What still happens on your worst day

Lower the bar. Be gentle. Rest counts. You've heard all of it lately, and it's all true. But gentle with nothing underneath has a way of sliding. One soft day turns into three. Three turns into a week with the curtains shut, and rest stops feeling like rest. It starts feeling like evidence against you.

On your worst days the cigarette used to be the one sure thing. It took the spot where a floor belongs and held nothing up. Build a real one. Three things that happen no matter what. You stay free. You eat something real. You step outside once, even just to the end of the street. Everything above that line is optional today. Nothing below it is.

The floor is what makes rest count. Take the same couch and the same three hours. After you've eaten and walked, it feels like recovery. After a day where nothing happened, it feels like sinking. Same couch. The floor is the whole difference.

Say your three out loud now, while you're reading, not later while you're deciding whether to stand up. You'll meet them tired and unimpressed, and they'll still count. Ask God for exactly that much. Just these three today, Lord. Hold me to them. By tonight the whole day fits in one sentence: I went easy on myself, and I stayed free.
