Hard days

They never got to see this

They should've been here for this part. The one who worried out loud, or asked one time too many, or just looked at you a certain way across a table. They died before you got free. Today that's the loudest thing in the room. The timing is cruel, and there's no way to arrange it so it comes out even.

Right now they're a missing witness. Their chair sits empty, and every free day feels like a show with nobody in that seat. Make them the one it's for instead. A day doesn't need to be seen to be given. You can live a day toward someone who's gone, the way you'd carry their name into a room without saying it.

They didn't want an announcement. They wanted you free, and free is happening, seen or not. The cigarette would pose as comfort tonight. It'd only fog the one thing they wanted for you. And God saw all of it. Every ordinary evening you chose freedom had a witness after all.

Tonight, tell them anyway. In the kitchen or on a walk, with nobody around to manage. Their name, then one plain sentence. I got free, and I wish you could see it. It won't fix the math. It moves the ache from something you're holding to something you've said, and that's a lighter weight. Tomorrow gets lived toward them too.
