Hard days

The sentence that shrinks it

You heard it leave your mouth. That flat, cold edge, aimed at someone who only asked a normal question. They went still. You went back to what you were doing, and the room never fully recovered. Hours later it's still playing. By now the replay is louder than the moment ever was.

Guilt left alone doesn't stay its size. It's like zooming in on a photo on your phone. The closer you look, the bigger and blurrier it gets. Soon it's pulling in every other time you were short with someone, and every fear about who you are. One sharp moment is real. The verdict it's building is fiction.

Repair shrinks it back to size, and repair is smaller than you think. No speech. No explaining the whole week behind it. Find them and say one plain sentence. "I was sharp with you earlier, and it wasn't about you." Then stop. The sentence works because it's short enough to actually say.

After that, let it be finished. Replaying it all day is where the pull to smoke finds its opening. A cigarette would offer to take the edge off, then leave you something new to apologize for by morning. God saw the whole day, the snap and the sorry both. He's patient with that edge in you, and He's still smoothing it. Say the sentence, and let the rest of today be free.
