Hard days

The place you had to leave

The bench by the side door. The loading dock. The balcony with the wobbly chair. Wherever yours was, it came with the same few faces and the only unplanned minutes in your day. Then you stopped. Nobody argued, nobody fell out, and that spot closed to you anyway. You didn't just quit a habit. You lost a place.

Call it what it is. It's a real loss, and it deserves the word. The friendships were real even if the meeting spot was a bad one. It's like moving out of a neighborhood you loved. The street's still there. You just don't live on it anymore. If the ache settles in and won't lift, tell a doctor or a friend who listens well. Saying it out loud is strength. Grief isn't proof you made a mistake.

Some evening your mind will make an offer. Go back once, just to stand with them. It sounds like going home. Going back won't return the place. Nicotine will rent you ten minutes of that world for everything you've got now.

The belonging was never in the cigarette. It was people glad to see you, and that doesn't run out. Text the one from that crowd you liked most. Suggest a walk or a coffee, nothing attached. Then ask God for the rest. Lead me to people who are glad I came. You're free to take the people with you. The spot can stay.
