Hard days

The part of it that was true

It wouldn't sting like this if it were false. Someone said it, and you've turned it over all day, and every pass lands in the same tender spot. If it were only unfair, you'd have shrugged it off by lunch. Instead it's grown well past its original size. It hurts because part of it is true.

Most criticism arrives like a small thing shipped in a huge box. The bubble wrap is their bad timing, their mood, their own history with the subject. The small thing inside is usable. The packaging belongs to them. Keep the thing. Recycle the box.

Say the true part to yourself in one sentence. If it won't fit in one sentence, most of it was packaging. Then act on that sentence once. Send the message you were slow to send. Ask the question you were too proud to ask. Replaying it forty more times adds nothing. A criticism that changes one action has done its whole job.

The cigarette used to muffle the sting without ever answering it. The words got filed away, still sore, still true. You need one honest sentence and one action, not a chemical full stop. God knew the true part long before they said it. He's never needed you to be beyond criticism to stay close. Corrected and still loved. Corrected and still free.
