Hard days

The lid you used to reach for

It went badly, and people saw. The number was wrong, or the thing you built didn't hold, or it was your turn to speak and you had nothing. You've replayed it ever since, editing a better you into every take. A bad day at work follows you through the front door.

Be exact about what happened, because your head is rounding up. A piece of work failed. That's the whole finding. It wasn't a review of your character, your mind, or your worth to the people who love you. Those were never on the agenda. Work is something you do. It isn't who you are.

At this exact point in an evening, the old habit used to step in. You'd smoke, and the day would feel handled. Nothing was handled. The cigarette just put a lid on it. A lid on a pot still boiling. Tonight there's no lid, and that feels worse for a while. It's also why you'll deal with today instead of storing it.

Do one small competent thing before bed. Nothing heroic. Put the things you work with back where they belong. Competence gets rebuilt by hand, in small pieces, on days you have none. Then give God the short report. Today went badly, and I'm still Yours. He didn't choose you on the strength of your best week. A bad day at work can't cost you Him. It doesn't get your freedom either.
