Hard days

The door out is someone else

Your mind's been playing the same song since you woke up. Six thoughts, one chorus, on repeat. You've turned the mood over from every angle, found three causes, dropped all three, and started again. It feels like work because it's heavy. It isn't getting you anywhere. Every replay makes the day a little smaller, with you at the center of it.

The way out isn't a better thought. It's one small act pointed at another person. Nothing grand, no talk about how you're doing. Text someone who's having a hard month. Send the link you promised weeks ago. Wash the dish somebody else left. The mood moves when your attention moves, and attention follows your hands.

A low mood shrinks the world down to one person. The cigarette used to shrink it to two, you and it, and call that company. One outward act breaks that frame. For the two minutes you're thinking about someone else's day, you stop being the subject of yours. You won't feel wonderful. You'll feel less alone in the room.

Pick one now and keep it under five minutes, small enough that it happens. Send it, do it, hand it over. Then let it be finished without checking your mood for results. God has a way of meeting people on the far side of what they give. Someone's day is about to get lighter. Free hands get to do that.
