Hard days

The day off that went wrong

You waited all week for this day, and it's going worse than the days you complained about. Nothing's wrong. That's the problem. No meeting to hide inside. Nobody expecting you anywhere. Just a long open stretch and a mood that can't fill it. You've already walked through every room twice.

Busy days carry a low mood along in the current. The hours pull you whether you agree or not. Take the current away and the low is all that's left in the room. A silent house does the same to a dripping tap. One small drip starts to sound enormous. An empty day doesn't cause the low. It turns up the volume.

On days like this, cigarettes used to be the whole plan. They filled the hours and left you flatter by dinner. Give the day one nail to hang on instead. One appointment with a real clock time. Four o'clock, walk to the end of the street and back. A clock time turns one shapeless day into a before and an after.

Everything else can be soft. Blankets. Bad TV. A nap at three with nothing to prove. Rest was God's idea before it was yours. Getting a low day across the line without a cigarette is harder work than the productive version anyone posts. It's a free day, even if it's a slow one. Keep the four o'clock, and it counts.
