Hard days
Still paying for that afternoon
There's a name attached to today's heaviness, and you know it. Maybe you missed something that mattered to them. Maybe you said the thing you can't unsay. Or maybe nicotine pulled you out of the room right when they needed you in it. The afternoon you keep going back to still happened, exactly the way it did. Clean days don't reach backwards.
Undoing was never on the table. Repair is. And repair is smaller than you think. It's one phone call. One sentence that starts with "I'm sorry" and doesn't add "but." It's showing up to the next thing you'd once have missed. It won't erase what happened. It changes what happens next, and that part is still yours.
Meanwhile, you've been making payments. Every low evening you take the guilt out, turn it over, feel sick, and put it back. Nothing gets paid down. Guilt without action is a subscription. It charges you every month and delivers nothing to the person you hurt. An apology gets paid once. After that, the account closes, whether or not they sign anything.
Tonight nothing has to be said yet. Pick your one thing, the call, the sentence, the showing up, and give it a day. Put that day in your phone. Then ask God for the one thing you're short on. Lend me the nerve I don't have yet. Their forgiveness is theirs to give. The doing is yours. Guilt keeps you living in that afternoon. Repair is how you walk out of it free.
