Hard days

Smaller than it looks at midnight

Same hour most nights. The house goes quiet, your hands run out of things to do, and it shows up. A memory. Something you did while nicotine ran your life, something nobody has ever heard. You've never once said it out loud. Tonight it isn't a memory anymore. It's a verdict on all of you.

You know the coat on the chair that looks like a person standing there at midnight? Switch on the lamp and it's a coat. A secret keeps its size only in the dark. Unspoken, it fills every inch you give it. Said plainly, it shrinks to what it was. A thing that happened, at an age, done by someone who wasn't free yet. Still true. No longer enormous.

The cigarette only lent you a few minutes of looking away, then handed the secret back heavier. Tonight, look at it with God instead. Give Him the version with the detail you always skip. He isn't learning anything new. He was in the room when it happened, and He's stayed. Hiding never kept it from Him. It only kept you from the relief of being known.

Start here. You saw all of it. Now hear me say it. Later, if there's one safe person in your life, a friend, a pastor, a sponsor, tell them too. One is enough. You're not the worst thing you did while you were owned. The lamp is on now. That's what free feels like.
