Hard days

Running the day on the reserve light

The day isn't optional. There's a shift, a meeting, a list, and it starts whether anything in you shows up or not. Not sick enough to call out. Not well enough to be good. You're running the whole day on the reserve light.

The cigarette never filled the tank. It just hid the gauge for a few minutes. Today you get to drive honest, and that starts with the list. Split it in two. Some tasks need a spark. Some only need hands. Replies, cleanup, restocking, the boring queue. Today is a hands day.

The proposal, the hard call, the decision someone will quote back at you? Move them to a stronger day. That version of you will do them better. Moving a task isn't failing at it. Nobody reading your week later will find the seam. Ask God for the day in pieces. Lord, just the next two hours. Then ask again after lunch.

Aim for competent. Competent is a complete day, not a consolation prize. You don't need impressive today. You need to show up, do the hands work, and clock out still free. That's a full day's work by any honest measure. A low tank, driven gently, still gets you home.
