Hard days

Progress hides from the front

You're checking for progress in the wrong direction. On a low day you only look up the trail, and all you see is rock. That's where the unfinished part lives. Almost nobody feels themselves getting better. Healing runs under the surface, too slow to register by the hour. So looking forward always gives the same report. Nothing's changed. This is just life now.

Turn around and measure the other way. Put today next to your first days, in detail. How often the thought arrived. What your hands did in the evening. Whether you could get through a meal or a conversation without planning when you'd next smoke. How you slept. How the first minutes after waking felt. Remember it for real before you read on.

Now set today beside it. Low mood, unimpressed with yourself. And still, odds are the thought comes further apart now and leaves sooner. There may be whole hours when it never crosses your mind. The cigarette used to take a bite out of so many hours. You're getting whole ones back. That's real movement, and it happened while you weren't watching.

Do this whenever a day tells you you're getting nowhere. Forward lies on a low day. Backward tells the truth. Then give God the credit, because He kept building while you weren't looking. Thank You for every step I couldn't feel. Climbers on a hard stretch turn around for exactly this reason. The trailhead is a dot. That dot is the life you're climbing out of.
