Hard days

Nobody warned you about the flat part

The first couple of weeks had a charge to it. You'd decided, and you could feel it. Sharp, awake, a little proud. People noticed. Then the charge ran out, and nothing moved in to replace it. No pride. No big sense of freedom. Just flat, a gray tiredness that sleep doesn't touch. And a voice asking if you made your life worse for nothing.

You didn't. This stretch is on the map. It's the long middle of a drive. The thrill of pulling out is behind you, the destination isn't in view, and every exit looks the same. The start gets all the attention, so almost nobody mentions this part. Feeling flat here doesn't mean the quit is failing. It means you're right on the route.

Part of what's happening is repair. The cigarette kept handing your brain a cheap copy of satisfaction and billing you for every one. Your reward system got used to waiting for it. Now it's making the real thing again, and restarting is slow. The loud early part is over. The payoff hasn't landed yet. That gap closes so gradually you'll miss the day it does.

Change what you expect from this week, not your mind about the quit. Push back one plan you'd only enjoy on a good day. Keep the boring commitments and let the bar sit low on purpose. If the gray is still there after a few weeks, tell a doctor or a friend who listens well. That's a strong move. A gray day lived free still counts as free. You don't have to feel the progress for God to keep building it.
