Hard days
Living the bad news in advance
How many times have you lived the bad version today? Eight? Eleven? Each run in full detail, start to finish. The news comes when it comes, and until then there's nowhere to put yourself. Waiting is its own condition, and it's often harder than the answer. Every rehearsal costs you what the real thing would, and buys you nothing.
Shapeless time is what makes this so heavy. You read the same paragraph three times and couldn't say what it said. So give the wait a shape. Text one person now and put something on tomorrow, a walk, lunch, anything you have to show up for. An hour with a job in it is survivable. An open evening isn't.
And have one thing to say to God while nothing happens, because a lot of nothing is coming. Keep it short enough for one breath. I can't hold this. You hold it tonight. Handing it over isn't the same as knowing the answer. It's setting down a weight you were never built to lift. The outcome was always in God's hands, even this morning before you knew to wait.
A wait like this is exactly the kind of hour a cigarette used to smudge. It offered to make time pass without you feeling it go. It never moved the news one minute closer. Whatever the answer is, you want to meet it with a clear head. Get to bed. Get to tomorrow. Let the news find you free.
