Hard days

Lazy is the wrong word

Lazy. That's the word you landed on. You've been on the couch most of the evening. The dishes are still sitting there. The thing you meant to do at seven is now the thing you won't do at ten. Once a word like that gets in the room, the evening feels over. Somewhere in the middle, you passed sentence on yourself.

Take the word off the table. It's describing the wrong thing. Drive isn't a virtue you either have or lack. It runs on a system that gives you small pulls toward things. The cigarette rationed out those sparks of wanting and charged you for each one. Without it, that system has to relearn making its own, and that can run slow for a while. That's a supply problem, not a character problem.

You've had the order backwards. You're waiting to feel like it, then doing it. Motion comes first, and the wanting follows. Anyone who's pushed off on a bike knows the first two pedal strokes are the heavy ones. After that, the wheels help. The start is the hardest part right now, and it's the only part you have to solve tonight.

Make it too small to argue with. Not the dishes. One dish. Not the walk. Shoes on. Let that be enough if it's all you've got. God isn't grading your pace. He walks at yours. If the low drags on week after week, say so to a doctor or someone close. That takes strength. Low still moves. Tonight, that's plenty.
