Hard days

Guarding the table alone

You've turned into the table's chaperone. Everyone stands up at once and heads outside together, and you stay. You're left guarding four half finished drinks and somebody's phone. Nobody's being cruel, which almost makes it worse. They just carried on. What used to feel like belonging now feels like exile.

Change one word and the evening changes shape. You're not excluded. You're early. Odds are some of them want out too. They're waiting for a reason. A scare, a checkup, a January. You went without waiting. First is lonely in every field there is. Lonely and wrong are different things.

Now look at what held that group together. The jokes, the stories, the faces glad to see you. All of that came from them. The cigarette just stood where the friendship happened and acted like the reason. Laugh at the same things. Stay put when they step out. You get to keep every bit of the real part.

When they ask, keep your answer boring. "I'm good." Boring answers end the debate before it starts. Then ask them one real question about their life and let the talk move on. God may have seated you there early for a reason. One day, one of them may pull you aside and ask how you got free.
