Hard days

Give them the captions

From across the room, you look like someone who's upset with them. The people closest to you can tell something's off. You're short. Distant. Staring at nothing at nine at night. Without an explanation, they're writing their own, and it's usually about them. Did I do something? Are we okay? Meanwhile you're spending a lot of your strength trying to look normal.

One short talk clears most of it. Not a speech. Not a plea for special treatment. In your own words, something like For a while I'll be flat and easy to irritate. It's not about you. My body's coming off something, and it passes. You're not asking them to manage you. You're handing them captions for a movie they're already watching.

Say it once, then let it rest. A quit that gets announced daily becomes everyone's weather, and people start tiptoeing. One clear explanation buys weeks of grace. The cigarette always did best when you carried everything alone. Once someone knows what this stretch is, you can stop performing through it. A lot of this tiredness is the act, not the withdrawal.

Pick the one person you're closest to and a calm five minutes, tonight if you can. Keep it short, a moment and not a whole evening about you. Then let them treat you like normal, which helps more than sympathy. God can soften your voice for the people living this stretch beside you, who never chose it. They're already on your side. Now they'll know they're watching you get free.
