Hard days

Bring the anger with you

You're angry at God, and you haven't said so, even to yourself. Something happened that won't fit. A diagnosis. A phone call. Something done to someone who didn't deserve it. Naming the anger feels dangerous, so you've gone silent in His direction. Right when you need Him most, you've stopped talking.

Bring it anyway. The anger is today's prayer, not the wall in front of it. You've been waiting to calm down before you're allowed back in. That calm isn't coming, and it wouldn't be honest if it did. He already knows the temperature in you. Politeness you're faking is the only false thing you could bring.

People slam doors in houses they know they'll sleep in tonight. Nobody slams a stranger's door. Shouting at God is what trust sounds like when it's hurting. The oldest prayers do it bluntly, and none of them ended the relationship. Anger like this is exactly what a cigarette used to swallow for you. It never dissolved any of it, only stored it up for later.

Say it the way it sounds in your head. This wasn't fair, and I'm still talking to You. Then stay in the room afterward. He isn't going anywhere either. Nothing may resolve tonight. You may get no answer you'd accept. But nothing's swallowing the words anymore, and you're talking again. You can be angry and free and His, all on the same night.
