Hard days

A gray day nobody posts

Freedom isn't a feeling. Today you feel nothing much. Flat, tired, uninspired. And if the cigarette got nothing from you today, you're also free, right now, this exact minute. Both are true. Only one of them counts.

Scroll back through the photos on your phone. Most of them are ordinary. A parking spot. A blurry plate of pasta. Half a thumb over the lens. Nobody posts those, and they're most of a life. A gray day lived free belongs in that pile, and it's worth more than it looks.

The cigarette ran every gray day like it owned the place. A low mood meant a cigarette, then another. Today's math is different. Nothing paid to a craving. Nothing borrowed against tomorrow. The day is heavy, but you're carrying it whole, with both hands.

Before sleep, give God the smallest honest thanks. It was gray, and it was mine. Thank You. He keeps the days nobody posts. Most of a free life looks like today, and none of it belongs to the cigarette.
