You turned down a hundred things
Quick count. This week you didn't shoplift. You didn't read a stranger's texts over their shoulder. You didn't pour salt in the sugar bowl for a laugh. No inner debate. No gritted teeth. The options slid right past you. Not one of those refusals cost you a thing.
Shoplifting a pack of gum would be easy. Two seconds, no witnesses. Nobody inside you made an offer or argued a case, though. The option wasn't in the room, so there was nothing to turn down. That isn't willpower. That's a closed question, and closed questions run themselves.
Smoking might still sit in a different pile, the one you keep an eye on. The cigarette talked its way into your maybe pile and squatted there. That pile is tiring, and it's temporary. Things move from watched to unthinkable the same way they arrived, by repetition and time. God sees every transfer nobody claps for. He's walking this one across with you.
Tonight, run a little roll call in a flat, bored voice. I don't steal. I don't snoop. Add three more of your own. Then one last line, same tone, no drama. I don't smoke. The first few nights it may sound a bit bold. Say it anyway. One night it'll come out as dull as the others. That's the night it joins the hundred things that cost you nothing.
