Becoming free

The costume was never you

Nobody is born needing a cigarette. You weren't either. You were a whole person first, with your own laugh and your own opinions. The habit showed up later. It got repeated until it felt familiar, then started answering to your name. It was a costume. Never the body underneath.

The cigarette hooked you, then told you the hook was your personality. Wear a costume long enough and you forget it's on. Then one night you catch your reflection in a dark window and almost laugh. Oh, right. That's not me. Quitting is that moment at the window.

Underneath is the person God made on purpose. He knew your face before any of this showed up. He never once mixed you up with the habit. So there's no new self to build from scratch. That would be exhausting. You just get to take something off.

Find a photo of yourself from before any of this. A school picture, a birthday, whatever you've got. Look at that face. It didn't need anything to get through an hour. Put it somewhere you'll see it every day. The costume's off. This is what I look like.

This is one day of Unsmoked.
