You never auditioned for this
Every friend group hands out parts. The funny one. The one who drives. The one who always has cigarettes on them. You got that last part early. Someone noticed a habit, said it out loud a few times, and it stuck. Nobody auditioned you. You just kept showing up for the role.
Long running sitcoms deal with this all the time. A character changes, and for a few episodes the jokes still aim at the old version. A remark about how weird it is to see you like this. An offer made out of pure habit. None of it is malice. The writers haven't caught up yet.
The cigarette wrote you that part and gave itself top billing. But a part gets dropped the same way it got assigned. No speech. No announcement at dinner. You just skip the thing, in front of them, on an ordinary night. Then again next time. Rooms recast you by what you do, and they're already at it.
It happens without a word. Somebody adjusts. Somebody stops offering. God never cast you in that part, and He's been writing you a new one. At the next gathering, stay in the room and be all the way there. When someone jokes about the old you, laugh along. It's a rerun, and you're in a better season now.
