Becoming free

You miss the hard part

This one's hard to admit, so admit it here. Part of you misses it. Not the cigarette. The stakes. Every day used to hand you something to be brave about before breakfast. Going to bed free felt like a medal. Now bedtime just means the day ended. Free, a little hollow, and embarrassed to notice.

You're not broken, and you're not slipping. Hard seasons organize a life. They hand you a clear goal, a daily task, and proof you matter to your own days. When they end, all of that empties at once. People feel it after long illnesses and long degrees. The hollow measures how much room the hard part took.

And the effort was never the point. The cigarette built that toll booth across your road, and resisting was the fee. What you were really buying was hours, money, calm and self-respect. Nobody misses paying the toll. You miss heading somewhere that mattered. The stamina you grew is still in you. Right now it's unassigned.

Give it a job. Pick one thing hard enough to need all of you. A body you've never trained. A skill you say you're too old for. A rift you've been avoiding. God carried you through the last hard thing, and He doesn't waste what He builds. Lord, point me at the next hill. Aim it at something you want to exist a year from now.
