Why the coffee feels unfinished
Your coffee feels unfinished lately. You reach the bottom of the cup and something's still hanging there, like a sentence somebody else always finished for you. You wait for the rest of it. It doesn't come. Good. That's two things coming apart.
Your brain is a lazy filing clerk. Whatever keeps arriving together gets stapled into one folder. Coffee went in with the cigarette, and after enough mornings the clerk forgot they were ever separate. The cigarette moved into your coffee and started charging rent. It did the same to the quiet after dinner and the pause between two hard phone calls. Those moments were good on their own.
What's coming back is better than a ritual with a hole in it. A cup that holds up on its own, and that's plenty. Every solo coffee teaches your brain the pair was never a pair. God tucked real pleasure into ordinary things and never put it behind a paywall. You get it straight now, no partner required.
Make the next one on purpose. Sit down with it. Leave the phone where it is. Give the first half all the attention the cigarette used to get. If that unfinished feeling shows up, let it hang there. It's old wiring coming loose. Then say it, even if the mug is the only one listening. I drink my coffee for the coffee now.
