Becoming free

Who you tell God you are

How do your prayers about this usually open? Often there's a preamble under the words. 'It's me again. The one who keeps blowing this. Sorry to bring it up.' You introduce yourself by your worst season. Then you wonder why prayer feels like reporting to a supervisor. That introduction has expired.

Try it once with the current description. Not a boast, just accuracy. 'It's me. The one You've been pulling out of this.' Then make the same request, word for word. You're not calling up from a pit anymore. You're asking for company on a road you're already on. Same request. Different room.

The old preamble dresses up as humility. Humility tells the truth, and the truth now includes the part where you asked for strength and got it. Leaving that out cuts God out of His own answer. He was there for every hour you got through, even the ones nobody saw. The cigarette wrote that introduction for you. It doesn't get the first word anymore.

Tonight, before you ask for anything, give one sentence to what's already done. You carried me today. Thank You. Then ask for tomorrow. Come as the person you've become, because that's who walks into the morning. You're not on probation. You're someone who was helped, and you're saying so.
