Becoming free

Who wrote all your excuses?

"I'm beat." "Not really my thing." "Maybe next time." You said them about the long flight. The weekend at a cabin with no easy exit. The dance floor. The all day trip with friends. Every reason sounded fair. You believed them yourself. That's why they worked so well on everyone else.

Line them up and something jumps out. Not busyness. Not age. They mostly shared one cause. A body that hated long stretches without cigarettes, and a mind that guarded the supply before anything on the calendar. The cigarette wrote your excuses and let you sign them.

Somewhere there's a group photo from a trip you skipped. Everyone's mid laugh at something off camera. Nobody notices the shrinking while it happens, because each no is polite on its own. It reverses the same way, one yes at a time. God's been holding your spot in the picture. The next photo has you in it.

Take the next invitation, whatever it is. Say yes before your mouth finds a fresh excuse, because it'll find one fast. Yes first. Logistics later. The old reflex gets replaced faster than you'd think. Somebody's about to ask. You already know your line. I'm in.
