Becoming free

They're not even trying

The world's leading expert on never needing a cigarette will be at the next table you share. They won't know it. They'll reach for the bread basket in the middle of a story, laughing, with no plan running under the conversation. No counting. No gritted teeth between courses. Ask what it costs them to stay that way. Nothing.

Now look at the picture you've been carrying of your own future. A long hallway of saying no. You at seventy, at a wedding, still clenching your jaw. The cigarette painted that picture to keep you from leaving. That's a hallway, and hallways end. The person reaching for the bread is where it leads.

The gap between you and them isn't character. It's time and repetition. Desire runs on feeding. Stop feeding it and it thins. Not on a schedule anyone can promise, but far enough that most days ask nothing of you. You won't be holding on by your fingernails for life. God's walking you down that hallway, toward an ordinary life plenty of people already have.

At your next meal, borrow their posture. Stay for the whole thing. Laugh at the long story. Let the talk wander wherever it wants, with no eye on the exit. Freedom mostly looks like staying in your seat. If anyone asks, three words cover it. I don't smoke.
