Becoming free
They went back. Now what?
The news reaches you sideways. Someone who quit before you is back at it. Maybe they told you this was possible in the first place. Maybe they'd lasted longer than you have. For a second your face can't decide what to do. Then two reactions land at once, both about you. One feels like relief. One feels like a cold draft.
The relief is superiority. "I'm built differently. That won't be me." The fear says if it took them, it's coming for you. They feel like opposites. They're the same move. Both treat one person's hard season as data about you. The cigarette would love to pass their story off as your preview. Their story isn't your script.
What you're seeing is one page of a story that started well before it. Small steps nobody watched, maybe not even them. Their file isn't in your hands. And of the two reactions, the comfortable one is the risky one. Fear at least keeps you checking your own ground. Superiority stops looking.
Send them one sentence. No lecture, no history. "Thinking of you. I'm around." They've got the shame covered. They don't need yours. Then pray for them by name. Lord, bring them back out, and steady me. Grace for them. Honesty for me. That's the whole job.
