Becoming free

They waited until nobody was listening

It usually comes out sideways. A cousin, once the dishes are cleared. A friend at the door with one arm in a coat. They check that nobody's listening, then say it like a joke. So how'd you do it? They still smoke, and they've been thinking about quitting longer than they'll admit. That question cost them something to ask.

The answer that helps is short. Skip the philosophy. Skip the tour of your worst week. Give them one thing they can picture doing tomorrow. Maybe it's what you did with your hands. Maybe it's the part that stunned you, that the cigarette was billing you for calm that was already yours. Details stick. Speeches slide off.

Lecture them, and part of them jumps up to defend the cigarette. Now they're arguing for it instead of against it. Nobody ever quit to win an argument. A plain story gives them nothing to push against. This is what it was like. This is where I am now. Two sentences. That's the whole speech.

Telling it steadies you, too. Out loud, to someone still inside it, your story sounds more real than it does in your head. What they do with it is between them and God, and He's been working on them longer than you have. I used to wonder how people did it. Now they ask me.
