The speech building in your chest

It starts as heat behind your ribs. You're at a table where everyone else is still smoking, and a speech starts building. What you learned. What it was doing to you. What they could have on the other side. It feels like concern, and some of it is. Underneath, there's usually a request. You want somebody here to agree with you.

Someone who's never liked olives passes the bowl and keeps talking. No lecture about brine. Certainty doesn't campaign. It has nothing to prove and no votes to collect. The urge to win them over is a part of you still hunting outside for a yes. God settled this with you in private. It doesn't need a show of hands.

The speech costs you the room, too. People get defensive, they argue back, and now you're defending your own life to people who didn't ask. The cigarette hogged the center of that table long enough. A speech hands it the seat back. And the one person who might have asked you something later, on the walk out, won't. You traded a door for a debate.

Give the no in a few words and answer real questions briefly. Then throw yourself into the evening. Stay for dessert. Laugh at the terrible jokes. Let them watch you have a great time without it. That's the only argument anyone remembers. Somewhere in the middle, send a quiet word upward. Lord, keep me steady in any room. Peace that needs a vote is rented. Yours is paid off.
