Becoming free

The sentence nobody argues with

“I'm trying to quit.” Say it and notice how it lands. It sounds like a negotiation that's still open. Outcome unknown. Everyone leaning in to see which way you'll go. Including your cravings. The cigarette loves the word trying. To it, trying means not yet.

“I can't” isn't much better. It means a rule is stopping you, and rules invite exceptions. Now watch a vegetarian at a cookout get offered a burger. “No thanks, I don't eat meat.” Nobody argues. Nobody asks how long it's been. It's settled, so nobody reopens it.

That's the power of a plain fact. It doesn't ask permission, not even from your cravings. And it's true today, whether or not it feels true yet. God already calls you free, and your feelings are allowed to show up late. Say the true thing and let the feelings catch up.

Retire the struggling versions today. No more “cutting back.” No more “day whatever of trying.” When it comes up, with a friend or inside your own head, say the plain one and let it sit there. No explanation. No apology. “No thanks. I don't smoke.”
