The patio table in November
Maybe it was the patio table in November, coat zipped to your chin while everyone else stayed warm inside. You had a reason for every seat you ever picked. The shorter flight, even when it cost more. The hotel with the balcony. The apartment you ruled out for a reason with a different name. Good reasons, all of them. None of them the real one.
Then there were the visits. How long you could last at a holiday dinner before you needed air. The movie you half watched because the ending felt too far away. You called that freedom. Go anywhere, do anything, nobody telling you what to do. It was freedom with a fence around it.
It worked like an invisible fence for a dog. A few beeps near the line, and soon the dog stops heading that way at all. The cigarette drew your borders and let you call them preferences. It never had to say no out loud. Now God's digging up that wire, one ordinary place at a time. The yard just got a lot bigger.
Test it this week on something ordinary. Take the inside table. Book the seat you want. Stay at the long lunch until the last cup, because the end is where the real talk happens. Notice that nothing in you is counting down. Pick any seat. The whole yard is yours.
