The old name on your sign

Former. It's a proud little word, and you've earned the pride. Someone asks, you say it, and it sounds like progress. But the old noun is still in that sentence, sitting right where it always sat. Former is a small word guarding a big one.

You've seen those restaurant signs. The old name in giant letters. Under new management in tiny print underneath. Everybody reads the big letters. Your mind reads you the same way. It grabs the shortest label it can find and predicts your next move from it. Leave the old name up and it keeps forecasting the old you.

The cigarette hung its name over your door and made you pay the rent. It doesn't get to keep the sign on the way out. God never made a category with a date stamped on it. He made you. Take the sign down. Not repainted. Down. Drop the noun, and the adjective has nothing left to guard.

Try the short version tonight, out loud, even in an empty room. No adjective. No backstory. Say it the way you'd say your own name. The first time, it'll feel like a stretch. By the third, it'll just sound true. I don't smoke.
