The number stopped doing anything
That number used to feel like a trophy. Early on, each new one was a win you could hold up. Now you open the app, see the figure, and feel nothing. Some mornings you close it unread. The counter has stopped paying out.
Then a sneakier thought slips in. If the number does nothing, maybe none of this needs doing. Wrong read. The number stood in for a freedom you couldn't feel yet. Now you feel it. Pencil marks on a kitchen doorframe matter a lot at age seven. Nobody measures an adult against the door. Outgrown doesn't mean failed. It means finished.
One honest caution. Graduating and drifting feel identical at first. Both check in less. The difference hides under the number. It was guarding a daily look at how you're really doing. Graduates keep the look and drop the number. Drifters drop both, call it confidence, and a bad month finds nobody home. Keep the look.
The look takes thirty seconds and no app. How am I, honestly? What's heavier than last week? Have I told anyone the truth about it? The cigarette kept a counter on you once too, ticking down to the next one. God never needed any counter to know how you were. You carry it now. That's what the number was for.
