The list you've never shown anyone

Nine days. A parking lot. A New Year's promise that made it to February. You keep a list of every time you tried, and you've never shown it to anyone. You read it the same way each time, as proof you're the weak case. Every fresh start has had to climb over that list first.

Change one word on it. Those weren't failures. They were scouting trips. Each one walked you into the real conditions. The third night. The argument. The wedding. The friend who always offers. The cigarette has read that list aloud at every starting line. It always skips the part where you learned something. You came home from each trip with notes.

Look at those notes. It's a trail map full of your own scribbles. You know which hour of the day turns dangerous. You know who not to stand next to at a party. You know the exact sentence your head uses to reopen the question, and how reasonable it sounds. Those hard weeks paid for all of it. Nobody on their first try has that map.

Put one lesson from an old attempt to work today. Plan around the hour that turns. Have an answer ready for that reasonable sounding sentence. That's your history switching sides. Those weeks weren't lost. God doesn't waste a mile, even the ones walked backward.
