Becoming free

The lighter way to carry this

There are two ways to carry a free day. Clenched, counting the hours, guarding it like a full glass through a crowded room. Or open, the same day, held like something you were handed. Same facts. Same freedom. One wears you out. The other fills you up.

Clenched is a leftover. The cigarette trained you to live braced, always watching the clock for the next one. Stay braced long enough and you get tired, and tired is when old habits start talking. The switch is small. Stop guarding what you gave up. Start counting what you got back.

Weekends with nothing to slip away for. A mind with room in it. Evenings that end when you decide. God put every one of those back in your hands. Lay them out and the day changes shape. You can't feel robbed and grateful at the same time, and you get to pick.

Say one thank you out loud today, to Him, for something you could point at. The cash still in your wallet. The quiet after dinner. Watch how much lighter the same day feels carried that way. Open your hands. This was a gift, not a test.
