Becoming free

The light you see is old

Starlight is old news. The light reaching your eyes on a clear night left those stars long ago. You're seeing them as they were. Now ask yourself what kind of person you are, fast, without editing. If part of you still answers with the old description, you're looking at old light.

Your life updated. The picture in your head didn't. That lag is why freedom can still feel borrowed, like it's due back soon. The cigarette moved out, but its description of you stayed behind and kept talking. Waiting won't fix it. A self image updates when you check the evidence on purpose.

And the evidence is sitting right there. A night you handled without reaching for anything. A Friday that used to be a whole event and now is only Friday. A hard phone call you got through with empty hands. Vague good feelings fade by morning. A named day sticks.

Now write one new line about yourself. Short enough for a sticky note. Present tense. A flat fact, not a hope. Say it once before you sleep, and again the next time the old description pipes up. God's been looking at the current you the whole time, no lag at all. Your picture is catching up to His.
