The lifeguard goes on break
Everyone worries about the room at a party. The crowd heading outside. The late hour. If you drink at all, the factor most people miss is sitting in your glass. Alcohol doesn't take your resolve. It takes the part of you that checks. At drink three you'll still fully mean it. You just stop noticing yourself drift toward the door.
It's a pool where the lifeguard's gone on break. The swimmers are just as strong. Nobody's watching them. Judgment loosens well before resolve does, and that gap is where good nights come apart. A person who still means it, doing something they never decided to do. The cigarette didn't argue with your resolve. It just waited for the lifeguard's break.
So make the call before the first drink, while the lifeguard's still in the chair. Tell whoever's nearest. A friend, the host, whoever you came with. 'I don't smoke.' Ten seconds, no speech. Once it's spoken, it's a fact other people hold for you. Drink three doesn't get a vote on something already settled.
If you know your history, pick a number for the drinks too, before the first one. Call it scheduling. You're letting the first hour version of you decide, because that one's really you. God's with you on Saturday night as much as Sunday morning. Your freedom is worth one slightly awkward sentence. Then go enjoy the party. It's already handled.
