Becoming free

The joke wasn't about you

You were still turning it over on the way home. Someone who hasn't quit made a crack about how long this would last. Or eyed the drink in your hand. Or gave the speech, a little too fast, about a grandfather who lived to ninety. You didn't bring it up. They did. You were sitting there being fine. That alone set it off.

None of it was about you. You were a mirror, not a target. Lots of people still hooked carry a plan to stop, filed under later. Later stays comfortable as long as nobody proves now is possible. Then you walk in, relaxed and ordinary. It's like catching your reflection in a shop window before you're ready. They flinched at themselves, and you happened to be the glass.

That's why the argument can't be won. They aren't debating you. They're asking for a little permission and don't even know it. Argue back and you hand them what they came for, a fight they can lose. That's easier to carry home than watching someone just do it. The cigarette has its own customers arguing its case for free.

Keep your answer small. One easy line, then a new subject. 'I'm good, thanks. How was your trip?' No case, no stats, no story unless they ask. Be gentle, because those lines come from a scared place. Then pray for them instead of correcting them. God reached you right where they're sitting. Bring them out too, when they're ready. Someday one of them will ask you how.
