Becoming free

The jar needs a label

The money counter in this app goes up every day. Cash you didn't hand over to nicotine. You glance at it, think that's nice, and close the app. Then it leaks back into groceries and small stuff you won't remember.

A kid saving up has this figured out. A jar on the dresser with one word taped to it. BIKE. They'll walk past candy for weeks because they can see what it's for. Nobody gets excited about a total. People get excited about a thing. Everything you handed the cigarette came back as nothing you could keep. This money gets to come back as something.

Label yours. One specific thing you can see with your eyes closed. The flight to the town your family came from. The chair that's kind to your back. The course you keep reading about and never sign up for. Name it today, and the counter turns into a fund. Say the name out loud and bring God into it. He's always been good at building something out of what got wasted.

Then find a photo of it and make it your lock screen. You'll see it dozens of times a day, and every glance shows you what the money's doing while it sits there. It's a trip, or a chair, or a course, getting closer by the day. That counter's a countdown now.
