Becoming free
The fight that moved out
It always started small. A bank charge, a long trip to the store, a look across the room. Then the lines you both knew by heart. One of you defending, the other going quiet. Then it came back, a rerun you'd both seen too many times. That argument had become part of the weather at home.
Now it's moved out. Nobody throws a party for something that stopped happening, so you may have missed the day it left. No more bargaining over where and when. No more sighs. The cigarette started that fight again and again and never once showed up for it. What moved in is plainer than romance, and better. Ease.
Your spouse wasn't nagging. They were scared. Each mention was one person doing the only thing they could about a risk they couldn't control. That worry ran under their whole day, where you couldn't see it. They carried weight you had no way to measure. God saw all of it. It was fear the whole time, and fear has terrible manners.
Ask them once what all that worry cost them. Then do the hard half. Listen. No defending, no explaining, no yes, but. They may need a minute, since they've been softening it for your sake. Ask God for one thing first. Keep me quiet and let me hear it. Your silence could be the kindest thing you say all year.
