Becoming free
The face you're proving wrong
You've rehearsed it in the shower. The moment they find out. That one person who raised an eyebrow when you said you were done with smoking. You've got the casual voice ready, even the little half smile. Part of this is being done at them, and it's been real fuel.
Spite is a real engine with a short tank. It runs hot for a stretch, then hits its flaw. You're answering a question somebody else asked. They set the terms. They decide when it counts. They might not notice at all. If they say nothing, the win never lands. If they praise you, it lands softer than you hoped. Either way, the verdict sits in their hands.
A self built as a comeback belongs to whoever it's answering. The day you stop caring what they think, and that day does come, it runs out of power. The cigarette borrowed their doubt and played it back to you on hard nights. You need a reason that still works in an empty room.
Hand their opinion back, unopened. It was theirs, not a fact about you. Then pick the reason that works in that empty room. Your mornings. Your money staying yours. Your word to yourself. Tell God that's what this is about from here on. This one's between You and me. Let them find out whenever. You already know.
