Becoming free

The exception has perfect timing

Rough day? Then you may have heard the offer already. "Today was brutal, so today doesn't count." It sounds kind. It sounds like looking after yourself. And it always shows up on the day you're too tired to check its math. That timing is no accident.

Check its math against your own record. Pick a real hard day from the old life, one you can still see. You could smoke as much as you wanted. Did the day get easier? Not the few minutes of relief. The day. Did the argument resolve? Did the bill shrink? You've got a whole file of those days. Not one got fixed.

Worse, those days ended with two problems instead of one. The trouble the world handed you, untouched. Plus a fresh one you made yourself by bedtime. That's like getting a flat tire and letting the air out of the spare. It sold itself as comfort and slipped you a second problem. The exception isn't offering relief. It's offering you a heavier tomorrow.

A hard day free is still hard. Nothing on your list gets lighter because you held on. But it ends clean. Tonight, clear one surface before bed, the counter or the desk, so the morning opens on one clear space. Then hand God the rest of the evening. Walk me to the end of this one. Tomorrow starts with one problem, not two.
