Becoming free

The day you can't find

You've gone looking for the moment you changed. The afternoon, the sentence, the hinge with a clean before and after. You can't find it. So a worry creeps in underneath a good week. Maybe this is a costume you're still wearing. No date feels like no proof.

Nobody ever watches a child grow. The kid stands against the doorframe, the pencil comes down, and the line is higher. Growth doesn't arrive on a date. It shows up on the wall. The cigarette shoved its way into every plan you made. Freedom came in while you were doing the dishes. It never asked to be noticed.

That's how it feels when something becomes yours. It gets ordinary. Hours that used to be negotiations are just hours now. God does His best work in rooms nobody photographs, and He didn't need your memory to sign off before it counted. You missed the day because you were busy living it.

Tonight, read your own pencil marks. Have you stopped planning around when and where? Have you stopped grading yourself every night? Did the last mention of smoking get a shrug? A couple of yeses is a new line on the wall. Then own it out loud. I can't tell you the day I changed. I can tell you I did.

This is one day of Unsmoked.
